Nat Trives and Jay Johnson’s class at Santa Monica College’s Emeritus Program to Feature Civil Rights Leader Who Once Worked for MLK, Jr. as a Statewide Youth Coordinator
In commemoration of the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Monday, January 17, 2022) as well as Dr. King’s iconic, groundbreaking 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech, the Santa Monica College Emeritus Current Events class—co-taught by Nat Trives and Jay Johnson—welcomes distinguished guest speaker, Reverend Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr.
The virtual event is free and open to the media, public, and anyone who wishes to attend “The ‘Dream’ Today and A Future Vision of the ‘Dream’ Fulfilled.”
SMC Superintendent/President Kathryn E. Jeffery, Ph.D. will introduce Dr. Chavis. (Read Dr. Jeffery’s bio here.)
Currently President and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA): The Black Press of America, Dr. Chavis began his career in 1963, as a statewide youth coordinator in North Carolina for the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). From 1993-1994, he was the Executive Director and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1995, Dr. Chavis was the National Director and organizer of the Million Man March. He earned his Masters of Divinity, M.Div., magna cum laude from Duke University; a Doctor of Ministry from Howard University; and a Doctor of Philosophy in systematic theology, from Union Theological Seminary in New York. Dr. Chavis’s areas of expertise include corporate diversity and inclusion, human rights, climate change, voting rights, bridging the gap between civil rights and hip-hop, and criminal justice reform.
