Wine of the Week: Simply Great Italian Wines U.S. Tour 2023

Published on

Simply Great Italian Wines returned to the heart of Chicago to present an elegant wine tasting event that featured wines from the renowned Consortiums and wineries of Italy. An array of wines was discussed in Master Classes and sampled at walk-around tastings from Abruzzo, Apulia, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Marches, Piedmont, Tuscany, Sicily and Veneto.

Among the Master Classes attended by members of the wine trade and journalists was “Delle Venezie D.O.C.-A Wonderful Journey Into The World of Pinot Grigio presented by the eminent wine scholar Mary Ross.

Among the wines tasted was Pinot Grigio delle Venezie D.O.C. 2022 from Bolla ($11.99).

One sip and it is apparent why this refreshing white wine has rocketed in popularity over the past few years.

With its beautiful straw yellow color and refreshing scent of white flowers and freshly cut lemons, it is a wine that goes with everything from light salads and cheeses to savory fish or chicken dishes or aromatic pastas. Seafood and grilled vegetables are its noble companions, but it also is marvelous on its own as an aperitif.

Delle Venezie DOC is a designated wine region that represents the entire northeastern region or Italy. It encompasses two of Italy’s most celebrated cities, Venice, and Verona. The two cities have occupied premiere places both in the culinary world and in literature. The two cities were the settings for some of Shakespeare’s most compelling plays, Othello, Romeo and Juliet, Two Men of Verona, and the Merchant of Venice.

Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio delle Venezie D.O.C. 2022 from Mezzacorona ($12.75) was another of the refreshing wines presented at the seminar and tasting.

A distinctive straw color with flecks of green marks the appearance of Ecco Domani Pinot Grigio.  An attention-grabbing aroma of sweet tropic fruits gives way to the taste of tart lemons and crisp apples. Served will chilled, the wine is ideal as an introduction to a meal of roasted salmon or shrimp pasta in a lemon butter sauce. Shrimp Scampi is a classic pairing. A nice apple tart or baked pears with cinnamon and a bit of the wine is a perfect way to end the meal.

The possibilities for food pairings are endless. Pinot Grigio is a wine that inspires creativity! For more on these wonderful wines and the Delle Venezie visit dellevenezie.it.

Always drink responsibly.
