THE AFRO — Most knowledgeable political historians agree that the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and the Voting Rights Acts, which passed one year later, became law because President Johnson passionately supported them.  In addition to the two landmark civil rights measures, the nation also witnessed the passage of legislation that introduced Medicaid and Medicare during the Johnson administration.

NNPA NEWSWIRE — In addition to his work with the AFRO, Edgar Brookins used the latter years of his life to serve as an advocate for a number of health causes, including prostate cancer and lupus, both of which directly affected his life in major ways. Brookins was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2016 and became an outspoken voice advocating for “brothers” to “get their annual screening from age 45 forward,” according to a biography Brookins wrote more than five years ago.  

AFRO - “None of this is possible without the fans, so thank you to all the fans,” the 50-year-old entertainer said at the induction ceremony, where a plaque honoring her achievements was unveiled, according to the New York Daily News.

AFRO - Recently on social media, I shared a USA Today story about a Black female homeowner in Indianapolis who suspected the value of her house was grossly undervalued. So, on the third try, she had a White friend stand in for the third appraisal. The result? Carlette Duffy’s home was valued at $259,000. When she was present, appraisals came in at $100,000 and $125,000

SAN DIEGO VOICE AND VIEWPOINT — Passing laws that make it harder to purchase guns by people who should not have them is not a threat to the Second Amendment right to “keep” and bear arms. It reaches a point that the people who commit these murders with guns are partners with those who refuse to pass the necessary laws to block or slow their purchase. We must start voting for people who hold office on the basis of what they do on these issues once in office and make their terms “one time” if they fail to address these issues. We can only do this using the ballot box and the ability to organize against those who are against us.

THE AFRO — We grieve the loss of these lives and the many lives lost or forever changed by injury due to gun violence every year. Every day in the United States, 100 people are killed by guns. Without action at the federal level, innocent lives will continue to be senselessly lost. More guns were sold in 2020 than any year in history: at least 20 million, an increase of more than 7 and a half million over 2019.

AFRO — LeBron James can’t seem to stay off of this page, but this time he brought Michael Jordan along. I am sure you have guessed there has been another chapter added to the “Who is the greatest baller of all time” debate: James or Jordan? This latest argument comes from Shashank Uppalike (sounds like a movie). I have never heard of this gentleman, but he sure got my attention.
