The closure, which is part of the merger of the chain with Office Depot, will be complete by mid-January.
The OfficeMax store at 2805 W. Plainfield Road in Joliet is to close by mid-January.

The OfficeMax store in the Joliet Commons strip mall will be closed by mid-January, an employee said Tuesday.

Signs indicating the 2805 Plainfield Road store is "moving" are not completely accurate given that merchandise and some employees will be relocated to other existing OfficeMax stores, including the one at 1520 N. Larkin Ave. in Joliet.

The store is one of the original tenants of the complex, which also includes Target, Petsmart and Old Navy.

OfficeMax merged with Office Depot in November 2013, and announced in May 2014 that about 400 stores would be closed by 2016 as part of the merger. OfficeMax had been based in Naperville, but the new company headquarters is now in Boca Raton, Fla.

The store closures will save the company at least $75 million a year and will ensure the company is profitable in 2015, according to financial reports. There will be about 1,500 OfficeMax and Office Depot stores total in the United States when the closures are complete.
