The 23,000-square-foot clothing store is to be open in time for the holiday buying season, Mayor Tom Giarrante said.

H&M will open a 23,000-square-foot clothing store in the Louis Joliet Mall just in time for the Christmas shopping season, Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante announced on his Facebook page.

The Swedish-based retailer, which sells men's, women's, teens' and children's clothing, has 14 stores in Illinois, the closest of which to Joliet are Bolingbrook, Orland Park and Aurora.

Internationally, however, they are located in 53 countries and reported to be the second largest clothing store in the world, according to Giarrante's announcement.

"They are expected to open just prior to Thanksgiving," he wrote. ?My wife Rose is excited about it, so I know where she’ll be on Black Friday. Welcome to Joliet, H&M!"

It's the third large store to announce plans to build in or around the mall in recent months. The other two are Sports Authority and Fresh Thyme, which are both constructing new stores in the former MyGofer/Kmart building at Hennepin and Plainfield roads.
