An off-duty Illinois State Police officer was severely injured Monday night after his vehicle was struck by a drunk driver, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said.

The officer was in the process of turning onto Black Road from northbound Bethel Drive at about 10:45 p.m. when his car was hit by a vehicle driven by Heather Brown, 31, of 2315 Avalon, Joliet, who was eastbound on Black Road, Gregory said.

The impact of the collision was so great that the officer was knocked unconscious for several minutes and had to be extricated from his car, he said. He broke several ribs and suffered internal injuries to his lungs and spleen, Gregory said.

Brown was also injured. Both were taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for treatment.

Upon her release, Brown was charged with aggravated driving under the influence, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol and intoxicating compounds, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
