Troy Craughwell Elementary School Principal Kathy Barker and Assistant Principal Steve Foster read to their kindergarten through fourth-grade classes every month in a program they call, P.A.L.S., or Principals Always Love Stories.

Each grade level gets its own special time with the principals, who choose the books based on particular reading strategy skills the students are currently learning and with the help of reading specialists and instructional coaches at the school.

Reading comprehension skills were emphasized at a recent P.A.L.S. assembly with the principals showing how students could make connections between the story and other books, themselves and the world.

The book for the month was The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Birthday by Stan and Jan Berenstain.
