It appears that when push comes to shove, the athletes usually win. That statement was proven true this week when University of Missouri president and the chancellor of the university both offered their resignations amid a controversy over race relations and discriminatory problems that some university students feel have become to great to ignore.

While reportedly the issue isn't something new at the university, the problem was catapulted to the forefront when a group of 32 football players sent out a tweet late last week stating, "The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe 'Injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere,'" the tweet read. "We will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students' experiences. WE ARE UNITED!!!!!"

The power of the popular was wielded and the results speak for themselves. There is much to lose on all sides when such drastic steps are taken but when a group of athletes stand together off the field as they typically do on the field especially when it comes to social injustice, the results can have a very powerful and wide reaching effect.

We all have a voice but many times we can be drowned out by the populous bent on keeping the status quo. Athletes who don't think of themselves as role models for the communities they play for are kidding themselves. Like it or not, all the attention and adoration athletes enjoy at that level of sport come with a responsibility to use it for good.

Regardless of an opinion on the topic, the fact that this group of athletes collectively put the system on pause speaks volumes to their abilities of creating change and what better lesson to learn at a learning institution like the University of Missouri than that simple fact. In a few months we will crown a national champion but given the risk reward this team's action did, I think we found our national champs!
