Kayak Will Co Forest Preserve

The Forest Preserve District of Will County is offering three days of “Paddle the Preserves” and “Private Kayak Instruction” programs in Joliet and Minooka.

Each program will feature four one-hour sessions. “Paddle the Preserve” and “Private Kayak Instruction” will be held from: 2-6 p.m. on Friday, July 8, at Rock Run Rookery, located on Youngs Road, south of Route 6, Joliet; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, at Lake Chaminwood, located on Shepley Road, west of Interstate 55, Minooka; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Lake Chaminwood.

“Paddle the Preserves” encourages participants to discover the District’s lakes by kayak. Previous kayak experience is required. “Private Kayak Instruction” sessions will provide one-on-one training tailored to the individual.

Kayaks and other equipment will be provided. The cost is $10 per person per session for “Paddle the Preserves.” The “Private Kayak Instruction” program costs $40 per hour per person. Both kayak programs are for ages 12 and older; ages 12 to 17 must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Registration for “Paddle the Preserves” is strongly recommended to ensure equipment availability. Registration for “Private Kayak Instruction” is required by the Wednesday before each session. Call 815-722-9470 to register.

Hike to see Fireflies in Mokena and Naperville

Two sessions of the “Firefly Family Hike” program have been scheduled for 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, July 7, at two different Forest Preserve District of Will County locations. One hike will be held at Hickory Creek Preserve – LaPorte Road Access, located on Route 30, east of Wolf Road, Mokena. The other hike will be held at Whalon Lake, located on Royce Road, west of Route 53, Naperville. Take a short hike of less than 1 mile to get a closer look at fireflies. Registration is required for the free, all-ages program by July 5; call 708-946-2216 for the Hickory Creek hike and 815-886-1467 for the Whalon Lake hike.
