An Ultra Foods store in Joliet will be one of 9 locations slated to close in the Chicagoland area in the coming months.
The 1590 N Larkin Ave. store was among the locations being sold by Indiana-based grocery chain Strack & Van TilJoliet-based parent company and its parent company Central Foods, 2600 West Haven Avenue in Joliet, which made the announcement this week.
In a press release from Strack & van Til the Ultra Food stores scheduled to close by June 18 were described as “underperforming.”
Strack & Van Til Vice President of Human Resources Derek Kinney didn’t have exact numbers but said that the Larkin Ave. store employed around 100.
Other Ultra Food supermarkets slated to close include those in Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Crestwood, Forest Park, Lansing, Wheaton as well as 2 in Indiana.
The Strack & Van Til supermarket chain previously operated a location on Route 59 in Joliet. In addition to the Ultra Food store closings, the company announced that it plans to sell 22 of its Strack & Van Till stores according to the press release.
“These 22 stores are expected to continue to operate and serve their communities on an ongoing basis,” read the statement.
According to its website, Central Grocers is a food cooperative founded in 1917 that “supplies approximately 400 independent supermarket stores” with a market share that is “the second largest” in the Chicagoland area.
The news of the Ultra Foods closing follows the recent announcement this month that 2 Certified Warhouse grocery stores in Joliet would also be closing their doors.
