Three groups of Romeoville High School research students and two Brooks Middle School students who were 8th grade winners in the Valley View School District 365U STEM Fair attended annual Illinois State University High School Research Symposium.

Each RHS team presented a poster about their research projects that they have been working on this year either through the RHS Research Methods course, or through their participation in Argonne National Laboratory’s Exemplary Student Research Program.

The projects, “Threonine: An Amino Acid Autonomous Molecular Assembly,” “Effects of Acid Rain on Plant Height,” and “Effects of Sodium Chloride and Sucrose on the Voltage Output of a Microbial Fuel Cell” were judged by experts and each was ranked as ‘Excellent.’

Students also had an opportunity to learn about research conducted by other high school students from around the state, learn about how the Smart Grid and Smart Meters work, tour the mammal and bird research specimen collection, hear from scientists working in different fields of science, and meet with a recent RHS grad (David Mancol, a Computer Science Major at ISU) about his experiences in college.

Attending were : Melaine Diep, Patrick Nowak, Laurel Wirkus, Bradley Ramos, Carmin Awin-Ongya, Mariela Medina, Teigan Glenke, Corinne Doty, Lauren Mason, Justin Vollmuth, Dionora Osmani, Eric Nelson, Savannah Peterson, and Nayantara Das.
