Lockport now home rule community

Following a special census conducted this summer, the City of Lockport official announced results that qualify the city for Home Rule status.
Lockport’s population count grew to 25,590, just over the 25,000 required for automatic Home Rule status under the Illinois Constitution.
The rule dates back to 1970 and states that a municipality can only achieve Home Rule status by either surpassing 25,000 residents or by approval from a voter referendum.
Now that the City of Lockport is recognized as a Home Rule community, the city has more authority and control over revenues, condemnation, licensing, and zoning, to name a few. It will also allow the city to earn a larger share of Illinois per capita revenues, such as MFT funds, for example.
Mayor Streit and the City Council plan to use the additional funds for the benefit of the 25,590 residents.
