Veterans and active-duty military will pay less for Forest Preserve District of Will County dog park permits in 2018 thanks to action taken Oct. 12 by the District’s board of commissioners.

The discount will be $10 off the price of a permit, which is the same discount senior citizens already receive. (Discounts cannot be combined.) 2018 dog park permits will go on sale Nov. 1 at four District visitor centers: Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville, Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township, Monee Reservoir in Monee Township and Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet. The permits can be used at any of the District's five off-leash dog parks.

Without discounts, dog park permits cost $40 for county residents and $80 for nonresidents. Additional fees are charged for multiple dogs up to a maximum of three dogs. Annual dog park permits are on sale from November through June. Half-year dog park permits are offered from July through October.

During their monthly board meeting, commissioners approved other changes to the 2018 fee schedule, including:

• An increase in the fee charged to replace a lost dog park permit from $2 to $5.

• A $25 per hour fee for businesses that charge their customers for classes, nature schools, camps, etc. that are held in the preserves.

• An increase in fees charged for paddling programs. Fees will go up from $10 to $20 for noninstructional programs, $20 to $50 for instructional programs, $150 to $250 for groups of up to 12 people, $20 to $50 for field trips with a craft rental, $20 to $40 for field trips without a craft rental. The increases will offset the cost of offering the programs.

The new fees will go into effect Jan. 1.
