Troy Special Olympics Basketball Team takes 1st at regional tournament

The Troy Special Olympics Basketball Team placed first in its regional tournament in January, held at John Hersey High School. The Troy Community School District 30-C team received gold medals and a team trophy for their victory. Team members are Ashley Castillo, Caroline Collins, Miko Perez, Allan Diaz, Mason Dixon, Jadeyn Tinajero, Michael Horn, Mark Harrelson, Seren Jenkins and Noah Melton. Coaches are Mary Kate Beutel and Nicolle Oldenburg.

Other Troy Special Olympics athletes competed in a Skills Tournament at Evergreen Park High School in January. Placing in the Female Junior Skills Basketball Competition were Zoe Barns, who took third place, and Josie Pearson, who took fourth. Colin Hurley placed fourth, and Marty Huntington placed fifth in the Male Junior Skills Basketball Competition.

“The students began practicing in October, and they worked really hard and dedicated themselves for the competitions in January,” Beutel said. “I’m very proud of the team and of the skills students.”
