There were about 60 Joliet Township High School students who recently attended Joliet Junior College's 9th Annual Black Teen Summit, celebrating this year’s theme of “#NoFear”. They attended with Central and West teachers Mr. Crim, Mr. Coatney, Ms. Mallouh, Mrs. Crim and Dean Thompson. The Summit’s audience also included students from Lincoln-Way, Bolingbrook, and Plainfield.
Students enjoyed listening to keynote speaker Toney Howell, a former MLB player and current talent scout for the Chicago White Sox. Howell challenged the audience approach to life's challenges and obstacles without fear, choosing to look at the opportunity in every difficulty.
Guest speakers also included Homewood-Flossmoor High School's Dean of Students, Danielle Lusby, and Joliet Central U.S. History instructor, Ernest Crim III.
Afterwards, JTHS students visited Popus Gourmet to support a new local small business.
Mr. Crim said, "As the sponsors of our club, we spend a lot of time telling kids what they should and shouldn't do to be successful. We might overdo it at times, so I think it was refreshing for them to hear it from someone different. Also, they received invaluable exposure to a college that goes above and beyond to serve its students and community."
