Joliet man shot on west side dies

Joliet - Javontae W. Gray (22, Joliet) was arrested and transported to the Will County Jail for the offenses of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, Obstructing Justice, and Obstructing a Peace Officer. Rasean L. Stokes (18, Joliet) was arrested and transported to the Will County Jail for the offense of Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm and Reckless Discharge of a Firearm.

On 02/07/2020 at approximately 12:09pm, Officers responded to the 200 blk of Republic Avenue reference to shots fired. Officers were informed a gunshot victim (17, male) had been dropped off at St. Joseph Medical Center and was in critical condition. On 02/09/2020, the victim had unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

During the course of the investigation, Officers were able to determine that two vehicles were driving in opposite directions on Republic Avenue. At one point occupants from both vehicles began firing rounds at each other resulting in the victim being shot while inside one of the vehicles. Gray dropped off the victim at the hospital and left. Gray returned to the hospital a short time later where he was arrested.

Detectives were able to determine Stokes was also inside one of the vehicles involved in the shooting and was arrested later in the day. This is still an active ongoing investigation and Detectives continue to follow-up on leads as they come in.

The Joliet Police will update the public at a later date when it has more information.
