Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is one of only 12 National Forests and National Grasslands featured in a new national "Recreate Responsibly" social media series. The series is produced in partnership with the USDA Forest Service and the National Forest Foundation.
Produced in collaboration with the National Forest Foundation and the Recreate Responsibly Coalition, the timely online series highlights exciting facts and insights, as well as useful tips for travelers who are considering visiting National Forests or National Grasslands – including Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie here just southwest of the Chicago area.
Darley Newman, TV host and producer of the Public Broadcasting Service travel series "Travels with Darley" hosts the "Recreate Responsibly" series. Peeks of never-before-streamed footage will be seen that was captured during Newman's October 2016 visit to Midewin NTP for the popular episode of her show "Midewin and Route 66." The 2020 production is tailored to today's ever-important message for recreationists: "Do your part. Recreate Responsibly." What does "Recreate Responsibly" mean? Find out!
From the Finger Lakes in New York to wide-open spaces in California, history, ecology and stewardship topics are covered. There is a special focus on the American bison – which are right here in Illinois, just outside the Chicago area, at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie. Learn all you can about the ecology, economical, cultural and historic importance of bison – America's National Mammal – during the month of July, which is National Bison Month.
A series of short videos, available in both English and Spanish, will focus on responsible recreation and provide useful advice for travelers to keep in mind while planning trips to national forests and national grasslands. Tips on leaving no trace, practicing physical distancing, and how to best plan ahead provide travelers ways to safely and responsibly get back outdoors.
