Representative Avelar (D-85) released the following statement in response to the Governor’s recently released plan regarding the closure of Stateville Prison:
“The state must address the inhumane conditions within correctional facilities as both a moral imperative and a part of our fundamental obligation to preserve and defend human dignity. The Governor’s recent proposal offers an opportunity to prioritize the well-being of those incarcerated alongside the safety of our prison workforce.
“While recognizing that changes must be made, the impact of the Governor’s plan on long time workers cannot be understated. Stateville is a major economic driver for the local community and many of its dedicated professionals lack the means to relocate or endure long commutes. This plan, if not implemented correctly, may represent a real threat to the livelihoods and well being of the impacted workers as well as the families and communities who depend on them.
“As we proceed, it is of paramount importance to ensure transparency, stakeholder engagement, and an equitable transition for affected staff. The needed construction of new facilities should be undertaken with the least possible disruption to incarcerated individuals and facility employees. We must ensure that this major project benefits the workers, community members, and incarcerated individuals who are most impacted.
“This is a priority issue for District 85, and I will remain vigilant and present opportunities for my community to engage with the process as it unfolds.”
