Veterans Day Ceremony honors Sator Sanchez

Published on

A Veterans Day Tribute to Sator “Sandy” Sanchez, the Hero Behind the Name of Our School. Students of Sator Sanchez School and members of the Joliet community, have you ever stopped to wonder why our school is named after Sator “Sandy” Sanchez? Today, on this special Veterans Day, we come together not only to honor all veterans but also to learn about and pay tribute to our very own local hero, Sator “Sandy” Sanchez.

Sator Sanchez’s story is one of true valor. Many years ago, during the tumultuous times of World War II, Sator Sanchez took to the skies as part of the Air Force, despite facing a difficult childhood marred by personal losses. As a student, he was a proud member of the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, dreaming of serving his country.

His bravery shone bright one day in California when a plane began moving without control. Sandy didn’t hesitate; he stopped the plane, saving countless lives and earning a distinguished medal for his courage.

In his role as an aerial gunner, he not only defended his crew but also showcased such exemplary skill that a plane was named in his honor: the “Smilin’ Sandy Sanchez.”
Sadly, while defending our freedoms, Sator faced a tragic mission where he did not return. Years later, remnants of his plane were discovered, reigniting memories of his valiant service. Today, we invite every student, teacher, parent, and community member to remember the bravery of Sator Smilin Sandy Sanchez, a man adorned with numerous medals for his service. Every time you step into Sator Sanchez School, remember the legacy of this great hero.

The family of Sator Sanchez, alongside distinguished guests like 8th Air Force Staff Sgt. Mr. Joe Bellman, who at 99 years young, is spearheading an education series on our local hero, and Mr. Tony Arellano, President of the American Legion Post 1080, warmly invite everyone to join this in-person ceremony. As we honor Sator, we also emphasize the significance of our Joliet natives in military service and hope to make this a cherished annual tradition.

Join us in remembering and celebrating the life and sacrifices of Sator Sierra “Sandy” Sanchez.

Let’s carry his legacy forward, inspiring future generations to be brave, compassionate, and always strive for excellence.
