Kehrein Center invites Opal Lee, Grandmother of the National Juneteenth Holiday to Resilience and Humanity of Black People in the Arts in the Austin community

The Kehrein Center for the Arts Foundation is thrilled to present “The Black Aura: A Weekend of Liberation & the Arts,”. Positioned between Juneteenth and July 4th, this FREE weekend event will foster an immersive interaction among artists and community residents, providing opportunities to uncover new artistic talents and deepen an understanding of shared history and identities, ultimately strengthening community bonds in the Austin area and beyond.

Highlights of the event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony inaugurating “The Black Aura,” with the grandmother of the National Juneteenth Holiday and 2024 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Miss Opal Lee https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEEGpedUtbk . Many city officials such as, Mayor Rory Hoskins of Village of Forest Park, Lashaun Ford, Congressman Danny David, and Alderman Taliaferro have confirmed their attendance. The Kehrein Center for the Arts Foundation will present an Inaugural of The Black Aura FREE TO THE PUBLIC at 5628 W. Washington Blvd., Chicago, IL on Friday, June 28th 4:00 PM. 

Miss Opal Lee initiated The Opal’s Walk Campaign to raise awareness for Juneteenth to become a National Holiday. She will be assisting in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the event. Opal Lee recently made national news when she was awarded the keys to her home that was tragically burned down by a racist mob 85 years ago.
