Lewis U. graduate becomes first Black woman on Illinois Supreme Court

Holder White, 54, also a Republican, will be sworn in on July 8, which will roughly coincide with the swearing in of Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court. White’s term will expire Dec. 2, 2024, after a full-time replacement is chosen in the November 2024 elections.

The Co-Responder Pilot Program authorizes police officers to bring social workers and mental health professionals on calls to assess if the person is experiencing a mental health crisis. Law enforcement and social workers can then decide if a mental health facility or other supports could address their needs and behaviors. Governor Pritzker's FY23 budget allocated $10 million dollars to fund this pilot.

State Senator Michael E. Hastings is sponsoring the plan to wipe out the state sales tax on clothing, shoes, and school supplies for 10 days in August to give consumers an economic boost as they go back-to-school shopping. As proposed, the sales tax would be lifted from Aug. 5 to Aug. 14.
