PBS and WETA have announced a captivating new docuseries, “GOSPEL,” that unravels the rich tapestry of Black spirituality through the lens of gospel music. This four-hour documentary, executive produced, hosted, and written by the esteemed Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., dives deep into the origins and profound influence of gospel music on Black spirituality.

The series reunites Gates with directors Stacey L. Holman and Shayla Harris, collaborators on the acclaimed “MAKING BLACK AMERICA: THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE.” In a recent conversation with host Stephen Henderson, Stacey L. Holman shared insights into the docuseries, exploring gospel’s history, its impact on the Black church, Detroit’s special connection to the genre, and how other music genres have drawn inspiration from gospel.  From the blues to hip-hopAfrican Americans have consistently been pioneers in sonic innovation

However, gospel stands out as a constant source of strengthcourage, and wisdom, resonating from the pulpit to the choir lofts on any given Sunday. The docuseries not only chronicles the history of Black religious music and preaching but also celebrates the profound impact of gospel on culture and pop music.

The accompanying concert, recorded in Los Angeles, features gospel music’s biggest names alongside stars from pop and R&B. Hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. “GOSPEL.”  The series pays homage to the evolution of Black gospel music, a fusion of sacred spirituals and the blues tradition that soared to new heights during the Great Migration. It became an outlet for the anger and frustration of living as a Black person in America, a theme still relevant today.

The evolution of preaching styles, influenced by class, gender, cultural innovations, and consumer technologies, is also explored throughout the series.

Viewers can anticipate intimate conversations with gospel singers, clergymen, and scholars, including notable figures like Dionne Warwick, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, Rev. Otis Moss III, and professor Michael Eric Dyson.

The concert features awe-inspiring musical performances, emphasizing that gospel is not just the soundtrack but the beating heart and soul of the African American experience.  Dr. Gates, known for his impactful documentaries, expressed the significance of bringing the history of Black gospel music and preaching to public television. With a dream realized, “GOSPEL” arrives at a time when the transcendent, healing powers of gospel are more crucial than ever.

In conclusion, “GOSPEL” promises to be a harmonious journey, weaving together the threads of Black spirituality and music, showcasing the enduring legacy of gospel in the African American experience. As the series unfolds, it invites viewers to celebrate the sounds of gospel and witness its transformative power across generations. Gospe is Streaming now on the PBS Video App.
