Rain delays at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center today are wreaking havoc on Labor Day Round of 16 in Flushing Meadows.
The scheduled match of the season between Four-time champion Rafael Nadal and Frances Tiafoe, scheduled to start after noon today on Arthur Ashe has been pushed back twice due to rain stoppages during the Petra Kvitova/Jessica Pegula match, which is still underway. Check local listings for the new time this afternoon.
Nadal, plagued by abdominal muscle and wrist injuries, is still favored to win, having beaten Tiafoe in their last two meetings.
Tiafoe comes into the match on a head of steam, having sawed the legs off Diego Schwartzman in straight sets on Saturday to reach the fourth round for the third consecutive year.
Nadal is keenly aware that he needs to bring his ‘A’ game if he’s going to meet the challenge.
Nadal is the current No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings, but the accolade is hollow against the show-stopping play of the newly up-and-coming Tiafoe.
French Open finalist Coco Gauff faces Caroline Garcia in the women’s singles quarterfinal. The 28 year-old is making only her second quarterfinal after Roland Garros in 2017.
Gauff was the runner-up at this year’s French Open, falling to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who is also in Round of 16 play today on Armstrong against the standard-bearer for Germany’s waning status in the pro-tennis world, 23 year-old Jule Niemeier. She swept past China’s World No. 39 Zheng Qinwen 6-4,7-6(5) on Saturday.
