Published on

Regina King delivers a powerful portrayal of political trailblazer Shirley Chisholm in the Netflix film “Shirley”, which celebrates her remarkable journey and enduring legacy.

Regina King delivers a tour de force performance as the iconic Shirley Chisholm in the powerful Netflix film “Shirley,” directed and written by Oscar winner John Ridley.

Streaming now on Netflix, this captivating movie dives into the audacious 1972 presidential campaign of the first Black congresswoman, shining a light on her remarkable journey and enduring legacy.

Chisholm’s powerful mark on American politics is brought to life with authenticity and depth, thanks to King’s impeccable portrayal and Ridley’s masterful storytelling. The film not only celebrates Chisholm’s groundbreaking achievements but also serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges she faced and the barriers she shattered.

Produced by King and her sister Reina through their company Royal Ties Productions, “Shirley” is a passion project that has been in the making for 15 years.

The King sisters were driven by a desire to elevate Chisholm’s legacy and ensure that her contributions to American history are recognized and celebrated.  Ridley’s intimate approach to Chisholm’s story offers a glimpse into her inner circle and the dynamics at play during her historic campaign.

From her supportive husband Conrad Chisholm, portrayed by Michael Cherrie, to her political mentor Mac Holder, played by the late Lance Reddick, each character adds depth and complexity to the narrative.

One of the film’s standout aspects is King’s transformation into Chisholm, from her physical appearance to her mannerisms and speech.

King’s attention to detail and dedication to capturing Chisholm’s essence are truly remarkable, resulting in a performance that is both powerful and nuanced.  “Shirley” not only chronicles Chisholm’s political journey but also explores themes of resilience, integrity, and the enduring struggle for equality.

It serves as a timely reminder of the importance of civic engagement and the ongoing fight for justice and representation in American politics.

In summary, “Shirley” is a must-watch film that pays homage to a true trailblazer and political pioneer. With Regina King leading a stellar cast and John Ridley’s expert direction, it offers a compelling and insightful look into the life and legacy of Shirley Chisholm.
