Frances Tiafoe and Coco Gauff are two of the top-ranked American tennis stars in the men’s and women’s Main Draw in the 2023 US Open.
Tiafoe is hoping to redeem himself after last year’s heartbreaking loss to World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the 2022 semifinal. Gauff is riding high after her title win at Cincinnati and her victory over women’s World no. 1 Iga Swiatek in the semi.
Five American men are in this year’s main draw for the first time in 20 years. There has also been a more than 20-year drought in terms of a US Open title on the men’s side since Andy Roddick lifted the coveted trophy in 2003.
The Women Singles draw promises even more excitement with the possibility of a Coco Gauff/Iga Swiatek rematch on Arthur Ashe with the No. 1 and No. 6 seeds slotted in the same quarter of the women’s singles draw. If successful, this will be Coco’s first Grand Slam title.
The road to the finals is paved with pitfalls for both. Swiatek will face Sweden’s formidable Rebecca Peterson. Gauff will venture into unknown territory against a qualifier in the first round.
Add to the mix No. 11 seed Petra Kvitova and No. 17 seed Jelena Ostapenko, both Australian Open finalists and the return of former World No.1, 33-year-old Caroline Wozniacki, making her Grand Slam return after a three-year hiatus, and you have the makings of a made-for-TV drama.
