Despite being on a busy thoroughfare near downtown New Orleans, Copper Vine has an intimate feel. For those fortunate enough to gain seating on the patio, it can be like dining in a tropical garden.

To simply call it a wine tavern is an understatement. Copper Vine is an ideal setting to enjoy artisanal wines paired with artfully prepared cuisine. Only the carefully restored bar that graced its predecessor, Maylie’s restaurant for 110 years, is a reminder of the locales storied past.

Executive Chef Amy Mehrtens has carefully crafted a menu that combines local favorites with a variety of Southern and European influences that invites diners to explore the selections of Sommelier Emily Walker. Their collaboration inspires curiosity and a sense of adventure.

Brunch, for example, runs the gamut from Louisiana Crawfish Beignets and Chicken and Boudin Gumbo to a Classic French Croque Madame to Southern staples like Wild American Shrimp and Grits and mouthwatering Cornflake-Fried Chicken and Waffle. The Cochon De Lait Cuban featuring slow roasted pork, ham and Gruyere cheese is a Continental twist on a Latin favorite. French Shallot Soup with Gruyere and subtle notes of thyme was flavorful, but a bit salty for my taste. It was a minor consideration in an otherwise flawless experience.

No meal at Copper Vine is complete with out savoring its fragrant Black Truffle Fries.

The Sommelier’s selection of Dopff and Irion Cremant Rose Brut from northern France was a perfectly refreshing accompaniment. Made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, it gets its delightful color from gently pressing the grapes to extract just a blush of color. Refined bubbles and the appealing taste of ripe raspberries and hints of wild strawberries make this an elegant table companion from the heart of the Alsace.

Chocolate and Brown Butter Pot De Crème with amaretto whipped cram and malted nut brittle is an absolute must. It was unlike any other dessert I’ve had. I regret not having the time or room for the delightful sounding Bananas Foster Rum Cake. Next time! For more, visit coppervine.com.
