World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz carved out a win against Korea’s Kwon Soonwoo to advance Spain to the Knockout rounds to determine the Davis Cup Champions in November in Malaga, Spain.
Alcaraz got off to a rocky start at the Davis Cup, losing to Canada’s top-rated Auger-Aliassime fresh off the Spaniards historic win at the US Open.
Auger-Aliassime went on to suffer a humiliating loss to Korea’s Soonwoo at the Davis Cup last Tuesday. The Black Canadian said he considered the win against Alcaraz the “match of my career.
“I have to give him respect. It’s a big effort to win in New York and to come here, across the Atlantic, and to show up again with this level and his fighting spirit.”
Alcaraz defeated Korea’s Soonwoo 6-4, 7-6 after a tiebreak. The match was close throughout, with Alcaraz scoring 45 points on serve to Soonwoo’s 40 and both tied at 3 on breakpoints.
The Knockout rounds occur Nov. 22-27 in Malaga, Spain. Visit DavisCup.com for more.
