Times Weekly, News Service

Children’s laughter filled the park on Cutter Street in Joliet recently while parents and community members received information and resources from community-based organizations during the 9th annual 815 Youth Day. Some of the vendors included, Justice for Wives Foundation, Eric Lurry Foundation, Spanish Community Center, Will Grundy Medical Clinic, ACLU, Joliet Township High School District 204, Will County Sheriff’s Department, Joliet Fire Department, Realtor Kimberly Marie, and the Joliet Titans were some of the vendors that participated.

Activities captivated the youth such as dance competition, talent showcase, gymnastics, 3 on 3 Basketball, and a magic show to name a few. “Joliet Unity Movement kicked off year 9 and is growing by leaps and bounds,” said an organizer if the event. “Our youth and families are participating in a series of financial literacy classes, and we are preparing a home ownership readiness workshop.”  The group is hosting an 815 Skate Night Fundraiser Tuesday September 20th, 2022, 6:00 p.m. at Family Fun Zone with raffles and giveaways. The fundraiser is to raise money for the organization’s programs.

The Loretta Westbrooks Scholarship Dinner Fundraiser, in honor of the late Loretta Westbrook is Friday November 4th, 2022, at the Jacob Henry Mansion.  Scholarship applications will open January 1, 2023.  According to a group spokesperson the goal is to award 2 recipients with $1000 scholarships each.  Continuing the Legacy of Loretta Westbrooks to give youth options for secondary education is one of the group’s core values.
