A delicate pink wine that makes you think of spring

By Dwight Casimere

Marchesi de Cordano winery is one of the crown jewels of Abruzzo. Located in northeast Italy near the town of Loreto Aprutino in Pescara province, it is famed as part of “the golden triangle of oil” with the towns of Pianella and Moscufo where some of Italy’s most prized Extra Virgin Olive Oil is produced.

The area has an ideal microclimate for wine. Native vines of Trebbiano, Cerasuolo, Montepulciano and Pecorino flourish in the vineyards.

From its earliest days in the 1950s, under Francesco D’Onofrio, the grandfather of the current owners, the area was famous for both its olive oil and its wine. The hilly area at the foot of the Maiella was home to the first vineyard at the historic estate of Santa Caterina. Since then, the family has expanded their holdings to seven municipalities with vineyards that extend from the valley floor to hundreds of feet above sea level.

Their great depth characterizes the wines of Marchesi de Cordano. Respect for the environment through non-invasive practices, guided by the principal of biodiversity, produces wines of exceptional quality.

Puntarosa is a pink wine that is drinkable now. Its deep blush is achieved by allowing the must to ferment in contact with the skin for 12 hours in order to enhance its aromatic notes.

Delicate aromas of cherries and wild strawberries with crushed rose petals introduce this soft, elegant wine to the drinker. Flavors of fresh berries linger long in the mouth. With Puntarosa softness and freshness prevail from the first sip to the last.

This wine is like a taste of spring. Have it with a fresh Watercress salad with crumbled soft cheese and crushed Walnuts and a drizzle of Balsamic and Olive Oil. Rosemary Chicken, Salmon with Rosemary or some Lobster Tails drenched in a Butter Cream Sauce with Tarragon are ideal for thesecond course.

For a main course, my favorite dish is Duck Breast or Young Quail roasted with Mandarin Orange and Fresh Sage leaves. Try it with this wine. It’s a lovely pairing.

Finish the meal with a nice cheese course of some mild goat cheese, soft Mozzarella or Burrata with a bit of honey, figs and some Cashew or Pine Nuts on the side. Serve it with some warm artisan bread or your favorite crackers. Don’t forget to invite me over!
