An expressive, versatile Italian wine that enhances any holiday dinner
By Dwight Casimere
Italian wines are known for their expressiveness and their versatility. That fact is exemplified in the exceptional wine Villa Gemma Montepuciano d’Abruzzo DOC Riserva 2017. This is a fine dinner wine that is perfect for the holiday table. It is equally at home with a Prime Roast of Aged Steak as well as a firm white fish, such as whole roasted Branzino or Wild Caught Salmon.
At a recent event sponsored by The Charming Taste of Europe, the wine was showcased in a Holiday Dinner that featured a variety of wines from the region.
With its deep Ruby-red color and purple reflections, the wine opened up to an intense bouquet of dried rose petals and the persistent aroma of ripe red berries and plums. A generous slathering of baking spices, black pepper and hints of dried fruits, licorice and cocoa lingered long on the tongue and washed over the palate to a delightfully long finish. The flavors became more pronounced with each bite of food.
A delicious cheese course of Aged Parmesan with Candied Pecans and Honey, with a delightful fig spread followed. The intense flavors only served to further enhance the taste of this superb wine.
A Chocolate Genovese with Semi-Sweet Ganache followed for dessert. Although a sweet wine was offered, I stuck with the Villa Gemma and found it to be a perfect companion with the chocolate dessert.
