On Saturday, April 1, the gate will reopen at Hidden Lakes Trout Farm in Bolingbrook, and boating season will begin in the Forest Preserve District.

The gate for vehicle traffic to access Hidden Lakes Trout Farm has been closed for the winter season since Nov. 1. Hidden Lakes features ponds for fishing and trails for hiking and biking.

Trout will be stocked in the ponds for trout season fishing on Saturday, April 1. To participate, anglers must have a fishing license and an Inland Trout Stamp unless they are under the age of 16, blind or disabled, or are an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces. Five trout is the daily harvest limit.

Also, three fishing derbies will be held at the site in 2023. Registration is open now for the May 6 Adult Fishing Derby(Opens in a new window). Details for the June 24 and Sept. 23 derbies will be posted later on the Event Calendar.

A new bait shop at Hidden Lakes is anticipated to open this spring.  

Boating season

Boats may be launched between April 1 and Oct. 31 on Forest Preserve lakes. Boat launches are located at Rock Run Rookery Preserve in Joliet and Whalon Lake in Naperville. Non-gasoline powered watercraft up to 18 feet are permitted, including fishing boats, rowboats, canoes and kayaks.

Boating also is allowed at Lake Chaminwood Preserve in Troy Township, but only watercraft that can be carried on top of a vehicle is permitted. Major renovations will take place at this preserve in 2023 and closures are expected. Updates will be posted on the Current Headlines section of the website. 

At Monee Reservoir in Monee Township, rowboat rentals begin April 1; kayak, canoe and pedal boat rentals start May 1. Boat launch fees are no longer required for personal kayaks and canoes launched on the lake. 

Frederick’s Grove

The lower parking lot at McKinley Woods – Frederick’s Grove in Channahon also will reopen for the season on April 1. This parking lot is closed to vehicle traffic each winter starting Nov. 1 due to the steep hill that leads to the lot. Also, four primitive campsites(Opens in a new window) at Frederick’s Grove will once again be available for rental.
