The Joliet West High School Choir invites the community to their Spring Musical, “The Hello Girls” on March 17 and 18 at 7 p.m. and March 19 at 2 p.m. in the Joliet West High School Auditorium, 401 N. Larkin Avenue in Joliet.
Just in time to celebrate Women’s History month, “The Hello Girls” chronicles the story of America’s first women soldiers in this new musical inspired by history. These groundbreaking women served as bilingual switch board operators on the front lines in France, helping turn the tide of World War 1. They then returned home only to learn that the US Army considered them contractors, not soldiers. The 233 women were crushed because not only did this mean they would not get the recognition they deserved, but they would also receive no discharge, bonus, or the VA benefits that they rightfully deserved. But these “Hello Girls” did not give up. They fought a decades-long battle for equality and recognition, eventually receiving it….in 1977, some 60 years later. The inspiring story is still relevant today as there is STILL legislation trying to give these women the posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor, with Illinois State Senator Tammy Duckworth as a co-sponsor.
The Spring Musical includes acting, singing, and a pit orchestra of Joliet West students. Tickets are available online at http://www.jtwestchoir.org/ or at the door for $7.50.
