Italy’s Jannick Sinner proved why he is the world’s No. 1 tennis player by defeating American favorite Taylor Fritz in straight sets to win the 2024 US Open men’s single’s championship in straight sets, 6-3,6-4,7-5 in Queen’s New York.

The crowd was firmly behind their guy Fritz, even though service problems in the first set seemed to rule the day. Just as things began to brighten up, the ground seemed to crumble beneath his feet. A forehand winner got him the break point in the first game, but that glimmer of hope was short lived as Sinner was able to drive Fritz further and further to the back wall.

Sinner’s wooden face never broke a sweat as he delivered the final blow to seal the match. “I went day-by-day, trying to practice well, believing how important the mental part is. I’ve had so many big wins this season. I’m happy and proud to spend this moment with my team.”

The U.S. Open trophy is the largest among all. In spite of its obvious heft, the lanky Italian had no problem hoisting it high above his head to the thunderous applause of the adoring crowd.
