The second time was the charm for No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka who defeated American No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula in straight sets, 7-5,7-5 to win the 2024 US Open women’s singles championship. After last year’s stunning loss to Coco Gauff, who mysteriously flamed out in her effort to retain her title this time around, the Belarusian used poise and expert shot-making to overcome Pegula’s powerful returns.

Pegula managed to keep the crowd on her side, even during moments when Sabalenka’s power seemed overwhelming. She held serve to stay in the second set, which brought the crowd to a deafening crescendo under the closed roof, winning five games in a row.

Sabelenka’s laser-like serves and powerful forehands proved too much.  It was a cross-court backhand that let Pegula know that she was no match for Sabalenka. Fleeting thoughts by Pegula of a third set became just as out of reach as that fateful blow. Sabalenka’s march to victory became a certainty.
