The Alliance for Civic Engagement (ACE) celebrated their 2nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Unity Brunch on January 25th at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, honoring what would have been Dr. King’s 96th birthday. The event was a resounding success, drawing community members together in a spirit of unity and reflection.

The event emcees were the esteemed media personalities—former Chicago Fox 32 News Anchor Darlene Hill and Chicago WVON Radio Host Atiba K. Buchanan—the brunch featured inspiring speeches, captivating performances, award presentations, and an afternoon of networking.

The keynote address was given by Bakari Sellers, CNN Political Analyst and former Representative from South Carolina. Sellers engaged the audience with an inspiring address that connected past struggles to present challenges, urging attendees to keep Dr. King’s dream alive through active engagement in their communities. His powerful message drew enthusiastic applause, reminding everyone of the importance of ongoing advocacy for equality.

The Youth Trailblazer Award celebrates the extraordinary achievements, leadership, and innovative spirit of young leaders within the community was given to Joseph (JoJo) Awinongya. The recognition is a testament to his exceptional contributions and relentless pursuit of excellence. JoJo is making waves in the boxing world. His tenacity, discipline, and strategic prowess in the ring have earned him accolades and respect, making him a role model for young athletes and non-athletes everywhere.
The Excellence in Public Safety Award was presented to Sergeant Antonio Tucker and Sergeant Traneil Thomas, both of the Bolingbrook Police Department, to honor notable accomplishments in public safety. The ACE Ruby Lofton Community Impact Award, named after a founding ACE member, recognized Bernard Winston for his sustained leadership and advocacy efforts within the community. Acknowledgement of sponsors, local legislators and elected officials, in addition to other guest that were in attendance, also took place.

ACE founder, Sheldon Watts expressed his gratitude for the community’s unwavering support, stating, “I am truly amazed by how far we’ve come. It is an honor to lead this effort in celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Knowing that our mission aligns with Dr. King’s principles of justice, equality, and inclusion is incredibly significant.” ACE Board Chairman Alex McNulty said “ACE will be celebrating its 5th year anniversary this year as well”.

Dignitaries in attendance included Mary Alexander-Basta, Mayor of Bolingbrook, Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, State Representatives Natalie Manley, Dagmara Avelar, and Debbie Meyers-Martin along with State Senator Meg Loughran Cappel, and a host judges and other local elected officials. Their presence underscored the event’s significance in promoting community unity and leadership.
The Unity Brunch and fundraiser concluded with an electrifying performance by legendary hip-hop artist Chubb Rock, along with comedy acts from Ralphie Roberts, keeping the audience entertained with laughter and music. DJ Ray Jones further enriched the ambiance, creating a memorable experience for all attendees.
Proceeds from the event will support ACE’s ongoing mission to provide youth scholarships, along with promoting civic involvement and voter participation through public forums, tactical planning sessions, voter registration drives, and educational initiatives.
