The Kohl’s store at Route 59 and 119th Street in Plainfield is among the 27 “underperforming” stores across the nation that will close their doors in April.
The only other Illinois Kohl’s store to suffer the same fate is in West Dundee.
The closing of Kohl’s is the second major store to close in the village as the Wal-Mart at Route 59 and 127th Street closed in 2023.
Kohl’s officials said employees who work at the Plainfield store will be offered a severance package or can apply for open positions at other Kohl’s stores. The Kohl’s at Route 59 and Caton Farm Road is not affected and will remain open.
“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and out teams.”
Mary Stowinski of Plainfield said she is not surprised more brick-and-mortar stores are closing.
“People can buy Kohl’s products online,” she said. “People would rather sit in front of a computer than shop in the store. The younger generation, who love Amazon, do not need to visit a store to make a purchase. They are comfortable doing everything online.”
Plainfield officials said while the closing of Kohl’s in their community is not good news, they pointed to the future openings of Portillo’s, Woodman’s grocery store and Cooper Hawk restaurant as good signs the village is a place for thriving businesses.
“We are certainly sad to see Kohl’s close,” said Village Administrator Joshua Blakemore. “Anytime you lose a retailer that is something the community takes note of. This seems to be a national trend for Kohl’s as they are closing 27 stores throughout the country. We had hoped they could hold out until the Woodman’s is built across the street but ultimately, they decided to close an “underperforming” store.
“The Village will work with the property owner and perspective buyers to get it filled,” Blakemore continued. “From a financial standpoint, as Kohl’s noted, it was an underperforming store, so there is minimal sales tax loss for the village. Overall, our sales tax projections throughout the Village remains strong, having eclipsed property taxes as our largest revenue source. The village continues to see commercial development throughout the community, and we believe we will see more exciting developments in 2025.”
