The ongoing Joliet Area African American Historic Context Study, community members are invited to attend a series of upcoming Community Interview Events to share stories, memories, and information about places, people, events, and time periods that are important to understand the region’s Black history.

The Community Interview Events will take place on the following Saturdays:
July 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Bicentennial Park, 201 W. Jefferson Street in Joliet. Free parking is available on the north side of the park. Walk-ins are welcome, or attendees may reserve a 30-minute time slot by emailing blackhistory@joliet.gov.

Community members can also contribute by emailing blackhistory@joliet.gov, or by texting or leaving a voicemail at (708) 683-9121.

The Joliet Area African American Historic Context Study aims to document and preserve the places, people, and events significant to the history and culture of Joliet’s Black community. The project is funded by the City of Joliet with support from Joliet Township, Lockport Township, Will County, and the State of Illinois. Completion is expected in early 2026.
