Residents in the City of Joliet have an opportunity be a part of the next phase of the city’s comprehensive plan.

“We are now seeking input from our residents through a survey we’ve developed, available in both English and Spanish as well as Polish, Arabic, and traditional Chinese,” said Planning Director Jayne Bernhard.

At the end of the survey, she said residents who provide an email address will be eligible to enter a contest to win one of 10 $50 gift cards. The survey can be accessed by visiting the project webpage on the city’s Web site at www.joliet.gov/comprehensiveplan.

Additionally, according to Bernhard, the first public workshop for the comprehensive plan will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Joliet West High School.

“This is the first comprehensive plan the city has undertaken in over 60 years, and it is vital that all members of the community participate,” said Mayor Terry D’Arcy. “This plan will guide future investment and development for the foreseeable future.”

The city is working with a consultant team led by the Lamar Johnson Collaborative to develop the plan, according to Bernhard.

The comprehensive plan, she adds, will provide a framework for how Joliet can respond to current challenges, adapt to future needs, and pursue inclusive growth, sustainable development, and equitable prosperity over the next decade.

It will also address key areas such as economic development, transportation, housing and neighborhoods, natural resources, and infrastructure, she said. The plan will offer policy guidance and recommendations to support the city’s long-term goals.

The planning process is expected to be completed in early 2027 and will include robust engagement with residents from youth to seniors, long-time residents to newcomers, and across all cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Final adoption of the plan is anticipated in late 2026 or early 2027. More information on public workshop dates and interim reports can be found by visiting www.joliet.gov/comprehensiveplan.
