Residents began receiving letters from the United States Census Bureau this week that contains information on how to complete a Special Census form online. Once you receive your invitation, go to https://portal.census.gov/specialcensus to complete your Special Census questionnaire online. You will need the 12-digit Census ID (personal identification number) found in the letter to take the survey. It is vitally important that the community complete their Census surveys and ensure that every person is counted.
Online Self-Response began July 22, and residents will have one month to respond to the survey online. If you do not respond by August 22, the Census Bureau will send a Field Representative to your home to collect your response in-person. In September, Field Representatives will begin going door-to-door, from 9 am – 9 pm, until all the household data is collected.
The Village requested a special census because of the community’s growth since 2020 (estimated 10% increase). It is important for residents to respond to ensure that the Village is accurately represented and receives its fair share of federal funding that is used for public safety, street repairs, and other municipal services.
The Census questionnaire asks basic questions, including how many people will be living in your household as of September 1, 2025. It also asks about race, sex, and age for each member of the household. All responses are confidential. The answers residents provide are used only to produce statistics.
Residents interested in learning more can visit the Village website, plainfieldil.gov, which includes information on Census Bureau job opportunities, how to complete your census form, and more.
