Widows fight for their rights and a voice in modern day Africa

One of the most important films at Tribeca Festival 2025 is Widow Champion. From award-winning Kenyan director and producer Zippy Kimundu, the documentary explores the plight of Kenya’s 8 million widows who are trapped between ancient tribal values and the evolving freedoms of modern-day Africa.

In Kenya’s rural villages, wives live in the same compound as their husband’s families. When their husbands die, they have no right to their house and land as widows. The property automatically goes to the husband’s immediate family unless the brother-in-law “inherits” her in a forced marriage.  If the brother-in-law rejects her, she is automatically forced out of her home. Powerless and homeless, she is left to fend for herself.

Enter the Widow Champion.

In Rodah Nafula Wekesa, the widows find not only a sympathetic ear, but also a fighter on their behalf.  A widow herself, she is able to use her hard-earned experience to help them break the shackles of their despair and find new hope. Through her effort, they regain footing in a landscape that is constantly shifting beneath them.

Rodah is no stranger to hopelessness. She was thrown out of her own home after her husband died. Her bitter experience led her to join the fight for women’s rights. She began organizing other widows to seek justice.  The road ahead was full of obstacles.

As a result, she developed a steely resolve unique capability at navigating the delicate divide between distrust from the husband’s grieving family and the crying need of the widows.

To gain the trust of both sides, must honor ancient tribal norms, yet enact modern laws that will protect the widow. It is a delicate balance that makes Rodah nothing short of a miracle worker. U.S. politician would do well to observe her technical skill.

In the documentary, Rodah not only restores widows to their rightful place in the home, but she also brings peace and harmony to the community.

At the conclusion of the film, Rodah Nafula Wekesa is not only a savior for her clients, but a champion to all.
