Meet the Knauf family of Bolgheri wine region in Italy’s famed Tuscany. The family has been creating magnificent vineyard-selected wines since 1993 and has been a major force in the creation of quality wines from Bolgheri. Their Arioso Vermentino 2024 ($42.99) is a shining example of the delicious fruit-forward wines created in this sun-kissed land perfectly situated between the hills and the sea of Bolgheri.
Let your culinary imagination soar with this beautiful expression of the Vermentino grape, which is native to Italy. This light-skinned grape variety is known for its luscious fruit flavors and intensity. Reportedly, it has been grown in Italy since the 1300s!
As presented by the Knaufs. It’s unoaked, so to allow its beautiful and delicate floral nose to step forward as the bottle is opened. As it is poured, aromas of white, orange blossoms and delicate chamomile fill the air. The palate is then awash in a flood of rich citrus delight, with hints of lemon, orange blossom, honey and shaved almonds bathing the tongue.
This is a marvelous wine to pair with all the light and refreshing flavors of summer. A salad of peppery watercress with goat cheese and slices of peeled mandarin orange is an appropriate start. Follow that with Lemon and Butter glazed shrimp over threads of Hearts of Palm ‘Pasta.’ Sushi or Sashimi are natural companions as are poached scallops, lightly drizzled in olive oil and served on a bed of creamy pureed cauliflower.
One of my favorite dishes is White Seafood Gumbo, made with a medley of Shrimp, Crab and Lobster meat, all enriched by a spicy Bechamel Sauce enhanced by Slap Ya’ Mamma Original Cajun Seasoning and a healthy splash of the wine, served over a bed of Jasmine Rice. Down in N’Awlins they use a unique seafood medley of shrimp, crawfish and calamari that can be found in the frozen food section of most local markets. Combine this succulent dish with A side of soft, buttery homemade buttermilk biscuits and some Southern Fried Corn and you have a match made in heaven.
