Four more schools are receiving free meals this school year in the Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202.
Students at Plainfield East High School; John F. Kennedy Middle School; and Liberty, and Elizabeth Eichelberger elementary schools will get free breakfast and lunch through the United States Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision or CEP program.
Schools already getting free meals in District 202 are Bonnie McBeth Learning Center at all satellite locations, Ina Brixey Center; Central Elementary School; Charles Reed Elementary School; Creekside Elementary School; Crystal Lawns Elementary School; Grand Prairie Elementary School; Lakewood Falls Elementary School; Meadow View Elementary School; Ridge Elementary School; River View Elementary School; Thomas Jefferson Elementary School; Wesmere Elementary School; Aux Sable Middle School; Drauden Point Middle School; Indian Trail Middle School; Timber Ridge Middle School; Plainfield High School-Central Campus; Plainfield South High School; and Plainfield Academy.
District 202 serves more than 25,000 students each year from a 64-square mile area serving parts of Bolingbrook; Crest Hill; Joliet; Lockport; Naperville; Plainfield; Romeoville; and unincorporated Will and Kendall counties. It is the fifth largest public school system in Illinois by enrollment, behind the City of Chicago, Elgin, Rockford and Indian Prairie (Aurora/Naperville).
All students in these schools are entitled to receive a free breakfast and lunch each school day so long as District 202 and its food service contractor Aramark continue to comply with government requirements.
The free student meals are not individualized. Students get two meal choices at the elementary level and at least three at the middle and high school levels.
Complete meals include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meat or meat alternatives, and milk.
Parent Maribelle Garcia of Joliet said she is thankful for the free meals.
“I have to go to work early so at least this makes me feel good knowing my son had breakfast in school,” said Garcia, whose son attends Plainfield South High School. “This is a God send to many families.”
All students with allergies or dietary restrictions must review the menu and ingredients with their parents and know what items they should or should not consume, according to district officials.
