Valley View School District 365U is providing an update on its ongoing contract negotiations with the Valley View Council of Local 604 American Federation of Teachers, which represents over 1,800 members including teachers, nurses, paraprofessionals, security, and maintenance employees.
Valley View Community Unit School District 365U has confirmed that the Valley View Council has voted to authorize a strike and on Tuesday, September 2nd, filed notice of their intent to strike with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. The earliest date that the union could legally strike is Friday, September 12. However, they have told the press that they may intend to strike on Monday, September 15. No actual strike date has been provided to the District.
We anticipate that if the Union does strike, we will likely not be able to have student attendance due to lack of sufficient personnel. Additionally, if the District makes up the missed days, this will result in changes to the school calendar later in the year.
While this is a step in the bargaining process, we remain committed to reaching an amicable resolution that avoids disruption to the community and student education.
As you may know, the Union declared impasse on July 14. Our intention remains to return to the table with the Union to work through their declaration of impasse, and we have reached out to the Union to request that we return to the table as soon as possible. Should a strike date be shared, families and community members will be notified.ion
