State Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, hosted a Grandparents & Grandchildren Ice Cream Social in honor of Grandparents Day, along with state Rep. Dagmara “Dee” Avelar, D-Bolingbrook, state Sen. Meg Loughran Cappel, D-Shorewood, and Romeoville Mayor John Noak.
Manley and the other Reps. passed out ice cream to about 50 people outside Romeoville Village Hall, where kids could play on the playground.
“For me, being a grandparent has been life’s most rewarding role,” Manley said. “I wanted to celebrate other grandparents, and the special relationships we have with our grandchildren.”
Photographs were taken of each family commemorating the day and shared with the grandparents.
The event was held Friday September 4 after school. Kids ranged in age from preschool to junior high.
Manley hosts a number of free events throughout the year including shred days, blood drives, back to school fair, senior expos, pop up food pantries and more.
