The Illinois Commerce Commission issued a final order approving with modifications ComEd’s proposed changes for how it handles data centers in its territory, and ordered a follow-up proceeding to address the reliability, affordability, and policy risks that remain. In response, the Illinois Clean Jobs Coalition released the following statement:

“While the Commission’s action is a first step that reflects the breadth and urgency of the challenges data centers present in Illinois, more action is needed from both the Commission and the state legislature to protect Illinois from data center impacts. The challenges posed by data centers extend beyond a single utility’s territory — from ratepayer costs and grid reliability to impacts on local communities’ water supplies and exposure to dangerous diesel pollution. While the Commission explores next steps in addressing the unprecedented strain data centers are putting on family utility bills and our power grid, the state legislature must act in tandem by passing the critical, statewide protections in the POWER Act.”
