From setting Joliet Central’s all-time scoring record (2,200 points) without the 3-point shot and leading the Steelmen to the 1970 IHSA State Tournament, to starring at Illinois State University (1,306 career points and Hall of Fame inductee), he was also an MVP Gold Medalist from Brisbane, Australia Professional Basketball League.

Roger was one of Illinois basketball’s all-time greats.

He was a dedicated teacher for 34 years, Joliet Housing Authority Commissioner always advocating for those in need, a Sunday School teacher, church trustee and a tireless mentor and coach, he inspired generations.

He is survived by his present wife, Brenda Fears- Powell, former wife, Cherry Ezell-Powell and two children, Tara Powell- Rodriguz and Roger Powell Jr.

Our deepest condolences to the entire Powell family, as well as all whose lives he touched.

A giant has left us, but his legacy will live on forever.
