Despite steady rain at the start of the evening, the community gathered in unity on

Tuesday, March 31, 2026, to honor the life and legacy of Sgt. Jose Dueñez Jr. a proud Joliet

native, beloved husband, loving father, cherished son, and loyal brother.

While weather conditions moved the 4:00 p.m. program indoors at the Spanish Community Center, the rain

cleared just in time for attendees to step outside and unveil a beautiful memorial sign along

Eastern Avenue in his honor.

Sgt. Dueñez’s legacy of service continues to be recognized not only locally, but internationally.

This week, his life is also being honored in a series of ceremonies in Lithuania, where his wife

joined the families of the three other soldiers who served alongside him.

The Joliet tribute was held in an intimate and heartfelt setting, bringing together Sgt. Dueñez’s

parents, siblings, and extended family alongside community leaders and partners. Attendees

included Spanish Community Center Executive Director Sylvia Acosta-Chavez, the Collins St.

Neighborhood Council, WWII Veteran Joe Belman, members of the Illinois Patriot Guard, Mayor

Terry D’Arcy, City Manager Beth Beaty, Joliet Police Department, Joliet Fire Department, and a

strong showing of community members.

The program opened with a welcome and prayer led by Amy Sanchez, Founder and Vice

President of the Collins St. Neighborhood Council, followed by the National Anthem. Remarks

were shared by Sylvia Acosta-Chavez, and a presentation was made to Sgt. Dueñez’s mother.

A touching moment followed as a giant teddy bear was gifted to young Jose Dueñez III, who

lovingly chose to share it with his grandmother.

Pastor Andrew Smith of Cornerstone Church of Joliet closed the ceremony with encouraging

words, scripture, and prayer. Mayor D’Arcy reflected on Sgt. Dueñez’s courage and applauded

both the family and the Joliet community for coming together in unity to honor his life and

sacrifice.

As the program concluded, a collective commitment to remember Sgt. Dueñez’s service was

embraced by all in attendance. The family then unveiled the memorial sign, generously donated

by Jeff Eberhard which will remain permanently installed along Eastern Avenue, serving as a

lasting tribute open to the public.
