The event is to Honor Joliet’s Black Community

The vibrant spirit of community, culture, and resilience is returning to the heart of downtown Joliet. On Saturday, August 29, 2026, the City of Joliet will host the Black Joy Parade, a free, family-friendly event designed to honor and celebrate the rich heritage, history, and contributions of Joliet’s Black community.

Beginning at 1:00 p.m., the parade marks the triumphant return of a cherished local tradition. Attendees are encouraged to line the downtown streets, wave flags, and come together in a powerful display of community solidarity.

The 2026 revival builds upon a historic foundation laid nearly four decades ago. In 1987, the late Dave L. Evans founded Black Pride Inc., an organization that spent 25 years uplifting Black culture, honoring local achievements, and bringing families together. While the annual celebration eventually paused, its impact on the community never faded.

“Black Pride Inc… showed our community what celebration with purpose looks like,” said Boise Walker, a key organizer for this year’s event. “Though the celebration paused, the spirit never left us. As we bring this cherished tradition back in 2026, we do so with renewed energy and a deep commitment to honoring that legacy. This will be a vibrant and uplifting celebration to honor culture, community, resilience, and the power of joy within the Black community.”

The massive undertaking is the result of a collaborative community effort. Planning is being led by the Joliet City Center Partnership (CCP), the East & Southeast Regional Alliance, the City of Joliet, and a newly formed committee of local Black community leaders.

Parade Route and Schedule

The parade kicks off promptly at 1:00 p.m. and will wind through the following downtown streets:

The festivities do not end when the parade wraps up. From 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the celebration moves to City Square for a lively community gathering.
