Hawk Auto wants to take another piece of the pie on Route 59.

The Plainfield Village Board at Monday’s committee of the whole workshop reviewed a site plan proposal from Hawk Auto to construct a new car dealership on vacant land at 16761 Route 59 north of Rolf Road and Plainsman Terrace subdivision. Approvals for the project could come during a March Plainfield Village Board meeting.

The new Hawk Auto car dealership is proposed to contain four separate buildings, each housing a separate dealer with each structure ranging in size from 16,900 square feet to 28,700 square feet. Two dealerships already have committed with Cadillac and Volkswagen, which, if approved by the board, will be located in the two southern buildings.

Hawk Auto already operates a Subaru/Mazda dealership on Route 59 at Caton Farm Road.

Village trustee Tom Ruane said he initially was worried how lighting from the dealership would affect nearby residents.

“I applaud you guys for going above and beyond the duty,” he said. “I just want to protect people around it and behind it (the proposed car dealership).”

When the concept plan was first introduced, trustee Richard Kiefer said he was worried about the buffering to protect nearby residents. But he like other trustees, applauded Hawk auto dealership for planting trees around the business as a landscaping buffer for neighboring homes.

“I am happy to see the stormwater management moved to the south end,” he said. “This is not going to be a business that operates late-night hours, and they are not open on Sundays.”

Mary Kasperski of Plainfield, who lives by the proposed business, said she would much rather see a car dealership than retail stores.

“They are responsible business people and I don’t think they are going to worsen traffic in the area like if it was a grocery store,” she said. “This is a much better fit in this area.”
