Senior Community Service Employment Training Program
Kankakee County Community Services, Inc.

WHAT IS THE SENIOR COMMUNITY SERVICE EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM (SCSEP)?SCSEP is a training program designed to assist low-income people ages 55+ with hands-on training through part-time assignments at community service, governmental or not-for-profit agencies. SCSEP provides supportive services to assist participants with obtaining and maintaining permanent employment.

WHERE DOES THE PROGRAM OPERATE?
Kankakee County and Will County

IS THERE AN ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINE?
To be eligible, a person must be 55 or older, cannot have worked in the last 30 days, must be seeking employment, have a keen interest in returning to the workforce and must meet the income guidelines (125% of poverty).

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
Once a person is determined eligible, SCSEP places that person at a community service, governmental or not-for-profit agency (at no cost to the agency) so he/she can begin increasing his/her employment skills. While at these agencies, persons train/volunteer for 20 hours a week and receive an hourly wage equivalent to the minimum wage rate.

HOW DO I GET STARTED ON THE PROGRAM? IS THERE A WAITING LIST?
Interested persons can contact anyone in the SCSEP Department to complete a pre-screen form to be placed on the waiting list. Adriana Smith is the Project Director for Kankakee and Will Counties (815)-933-7883 or 815-922-3499 or aharper@kccsi-cap.org.I AM RETIRED AND/OR RECEIVE GOVERNMENT BENEFITS; I DON’T WANT AN
ACTUAL JOB; I JUST NEED TO SUPPLEMENT MY INCOME; IS SCSEP RIGHT FOR ME?
SCSEP is designed to assist persons who wish to return to the workforce but need to increase their skills or need some form of employment support.

I VOLUNTEER AT A NON-PROFIT AGENCY; CAN I GET PAID TO VOLUNTEER THERE
THROUGH THE PROGRAM?

The program is designed to help persons whose goals are to find employment. Just because a person is already volunteering at an agency does not mean they are eligible for SCSEP or that they will be placed at the agency they volunteer at. The program frowns upon placing persons at agencies they already volunteer at because that can hinder their interest in seeking employment.

I WAS REFERRED TO THE PROGRAM BY A SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCY TO FILL A
POSITION AT THEIR FACILITY. CAN SCSEP PLACE ME THERE?

Regardless of whom referred a person to the program, everyone will be pre-screened and placed on a waiting list. It is not a guarantee that a person will be placed at the agency that gave them the referral.
